I have a 1987 Ranger XLT, 2.9L V6, 4x4, auto transmission. My problem is when I start it cold it runs fine for about 30 seconds then the engine stalls. Then I start it again and it will do the same thing. As the engine warms up, the stalling will stop and the engine will idle fine. The timing is correct, fuel pressure is ok, no vacuum leaks, and no engine codes.
Another problem I have is when driving at a steady 45-55 mph the engine feels like it is bucking/misfiring. It has a new cap, rotor, wires, and plugs. Compression test on all cylinders is ok. Fuel pressure is ok.
Thanks for the replies. I have tested the TPS and it checks out fine. I hadn't considered the ignition module. Is there a test that I could do on it or is my only option to replace it? I hope it isn't the ignition module cause that means pulling the distributor and we all know what a ***** that is!
Pull the EEC-IV codes first, to be sure. All you need is a voltometer or a EEC code scanner. Both are cheap and invaluable in tracing problems like this down.
Well I found the problem. After racking my brain, I went back to the basics and found I had a faulty spark plug wire and a bad spot in the wire for the #3 fuel injector. How about that. Just think if I went to a mechanic. I would have been charged an arm and a leg for stuff I didn't need. Anyway she purrs like a kitten now.
