Engine rebuild...
Hey all. I'm going to start getting price quotes for having an engine shop rebuild my 300 4.9L engine in my Ford F100. I live in California. Any idea how much it would cost me to have my engine completely rebuilt by an engine shop. Have any of you had an engine shop do it? I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks everyone.

Not sure what part of California you live in but Adam's Machine shop in Lancaster charges about $800 for a short block.
They do good work but I don't know how or what they charge for a total rebuild since I always do my own heads.

Rebuild costs
Normally it is much less expensive to do the dirty nasty work yourself if you are up to it. Renting an engine hoist and doing the dirty work will save you big bucks if that is what you intend to do. A remanufactured long block (remanufactured rotating assembly and head) is cheaper than having a machine shop rebore and assemble a short block (rotating assembly) with new rings and bearings. That is assuming that is only what is needed. There is no way to tell if the cylinder walls can be reclaimed or not until it is torn down. Normally an engine R&R (remove and replace) is around $400 US dollars, on up, depending if you want it turn key or just installed. Add to that the cost of the new parts, and machine work, and you might be breaking the $2K mark.
