Question Headlight flash

I posted this under general discussion and got no reply.

This is on my 98 Taurus.

When driving at night the head lights will dim, then go back to normal. This happens every once in a while. Is this the alternator going bad? Bad battery?
or what?

I would check the battery first (easiest), then the alternator (some places will check the alternator for free--but you gotta remove it from the vehicle). I can't for the life of me remember which one it was for me when it happened on my crown vic

Do you have a high powered stereo system? If you do, it could be that your bass is hitting, and drawing a lot of current and dimming the headlights. How old is the battery?

Sorry 'bout that...

However, that's where this thread is going to.

Just can't have Taurus talk on an Expedition board.

Get a cheap voltmeter and monitor your system voltage.

It likely is the voltage regulator taking a moment to kick in...which means it is probably is on its way out.

Take it somewhere and have them test the battery and charging system, many auto parts places will do it for free.
