I've got a 94 Splash extended cab, 4.0 with 5spd w/98k that the CEL has come on in. Thinking it might be the MAF I cleaned that yesterday, per the instructions I found here. No diff truck still runs bad, feels like a miss and very poor acceleration off the line, almost feels like it has turbo lag. Although with the AC on it runs fine. So I now need to get the codes read. I'm looking to pick up a code reader and seeing if anyone has a recommendation for a decent inexpensive one.
You don't need a code reader, although they are cheap enought for our EEC-IV engines. I picked mine up for less than $40. But all you really need is a jumper wire and you can read the codes off of the dummy lights in the dash. Can't remember the procedure just now, but I will look it up and let you know.
I purchased an inexpensive code reader for Ford off e-bay for $20. The test outlet should be on the cab side of the battery box under the hood. There is a 5 or 6 outlet plug and a single wire on its own plug. You can use a jumper from the single wire to battery ground. Turn the key on without starting the engine and the "check engine" light will flash the codes. They do go pretty fast and you have to concentrate. Each code is repeated twice - e.g. blink-blink . . . . . 2 blink-blink-blink...... 3 blink....... 1 long pause next code. The reader that I purchased has a light and also an audio tone which I think is a little easier to deal with.
References to what the codes mean - Fordspeak to english - are in these threads.
pulled the codes in my Ranger tonight. Getting the following codes 157, 158, 111, and 10. From what I can find 157 and 158 deal with the Mass Air flow sensor. Hoping another cleaning of the sensor will take care of that. The codes I can't figure out are the 10 and the 111. The truck is a 94 Ranger with 4.0 and 98K with 5spd. Any help is greatly appreciated.
OBD I code:111=system passed. There would be no such code as 10 because the number 0 (zero) does no exist in the codes. So I"m guessing that was a misread or an overlap of one of the previous codes. Hope that helps
10 was the seperator code in systems that used 2 digit codes. Newer readers (starting with the SuperStar II tester) typically wouldn't display it. I used to own a first generation Star tester that would show the 10 code between fault codes. My SuperStar II doesn't. It would be nice if I could afford a NGS tester.
A 10 is just a "1" and a long pause between the next number.
I finally got around to cleaning the Mass Air flow this weekend.
Once I put it all back together and started up the truck the CEL came on again. So pull the codes once again and the only one I still get is 157, was originally getting 158 also. So the cleaning helped some but I guess not enough. Is it now time to go out and get a new Mass air flow sensor or is there something else I should try. Also if I get a new one, is it better to get one from the dealer or would one from say NAPA be just as good. Thanks much. Truck in question is a 94 with 4.0 and 5 speed w/ 98k
