Last year the ABS started going engaging in the middle of summer...on dry pavement, at slow speeds, for no reason. When the snow came though...oh boy....I had to take it in right away and ended up replacing the sensors....there was no problem with the brakes.
Now....its closing in on snow time again....and wouldn't you know it....they just started going again....dry pavement....slow speeds....ANY speeds..
Anyone know what to do? I shouldn't need new ABS sensors already!!!!!!
I answered this question a few weeks ago in this forum. I had the same problem like you. The solution was to take the front sensor out carefully and clean the rust off the mounting surface, grease the area and install the sensor back in. It worked for my X and my Astro AWD van, they have similar design for the ABS system at the front wheel, similar problems. I found the GM TSB regarding this trouble, the cleaning was the recommanded fix for it.
You have wasted money last year for a new ABS sensor, the guy who did it probably didn't clean the area before he installed the new one.
There are two sensors, one on each front wheel hub bearing assembly. You need to take off the caliper, caliper bracket, brake rotor and splash shield to reach the ABS sensor. One allen bolt holding the sensor in place, there is an O ring on the shaft of the sensor body to keep the grease in the bearing so it is a very tight fit. I had to use a lot of liquid wrench to soak it before I can take it out of the hole in one piece, you have to be very careful, do it slowly. It would come out ok. I did it on my X and my van, both came out ok.
You have to do both wheels, because you don't know which one is causing the problem. You can use a AC Volt meter to check the induced AC voltage on the sensor while spinning the front wheel, they should be above 0.4 AC volt on hand speed. But that is too much trouble, I just did both wheels and the trouble was cleared. I had a lot of rust build up underneath the sensors. I used a brass wire brush fitted on a drill to clean them up really good, don't forget to plug the hole with a piece of cloth before you clean it, you don't want any dirt to drop inside to the wheel bearings.
