I took off the inspection plate for the flywheel the other day after my 3rd starter was replaced and noticed that the big gear has a few teeth missing. How hard is it to replace? What do I need to do to replace it? thanks
Well, besides getting it OFF, it's pretty simple. Once you get the flywheel out of truck, either: buy the ring and install yourself(using torch), or take to machine shop and have someone do it for you.
If you have some basic tools, you can do it yourself. Use torch to either cut old off or just heat it enough that it falls off(prop wheel up off ground enough to that it can fall off), then warm new ring gear up with torch(slowly and evenly) and then using GLOVES, drop it back on wheel. It will shoulder up and should sit on there just right again. Relatively easy job.
Most shops would probably charge you $20 for doing it?
