I have a 78 bronco with a 351 m and auto tranny. I started having problems Thursday. I was driving home and it just died, popped the hood and noticed the diaphragm on the carb had started leaking. Fixed that problem, drove about 10 miles it just died again , so I changed the fuel filter. Still nothing so I checked the fuel pump , it was not pumping. I replaced it Friday. I was in it today and it did the same thing , I was driving and it just died. you guys got any ideas on what to look for now I have not checked it out since it died the last time. But after the engine cools off it will start right back up.
Went through exact same thing on my 78 about 10 years ago-knew it was a fuel prob.- new fuel pump , and same thing happened as you described, I towed home the last it happened- got about 3 feet 5/16 fuel hose and secured a 1 gal. gas can in engine compartment- hooked hose to fuel pump and other end to gas can- ran fine no probs.- I found rusted pin holes in steel fuel line-NEVER smelled fuel or saw leak --- EVER ---to indicate this!!! MAY NOT BE YOUR PROB. but something to look at!!!(PS I've worked in a -same- Ford service dept. since 1977- still learn something new every day- no matter how smart I think I am!!!)
I missed something--He DID say pump was'nt pumping- massive vac leak on this would cause stalling- usually will start back up-fuel injected see hi idle issues.
BLUEOVALFAN-ARE you sure you have fuel,Ign module on inner fender usually has to sit and cool down before it starts back up(replace BOTH ign. module AND stator in dist. IF there is a no fire concern. TO edproto- check hose going to pvc valve, hose collapses-falls apart, mushy to touch-sets a lean code if there a long time-also clean throttle body- check idle controll valve on top of throttle housing-tap when it won't idle(or won't start without pushing gas pedel)HOPE THIS HELPS!!!!!!!!
