Mine were the same way. I sanded them and then primed. Then I sprayed them with black and clearcoated. They look good now. You can definately tell that it's not stock though. The post covers are made out of a plastic with a metalized coating on it.

One of mine got a little ding in it and once I stopped by a Ford body shop inquiring about replacement. The advisor indicated that it wouldn't be worth it inasmuch as the rear panel glass had to be removed. Seems like she mentioned something like $500-600 for one side. Needless to say, I still have a ding in mine.
SHe was correct in the rear glass removal. The peices are riveted into place. I just masked everything off and preped well. I got great results and it doesn't look like crap anymore!
I just purchased a 2003 expy and before i took it home i nit picked it from the dealer... one of the issues was the black pillers between the doors, it looks as if the shine peeled off.. ford told me they would have to order new pieces (which they did) but that you cannot paint them.
part 2
when I went back to have them changed they took the old ones off and undernieth was painted as the color of the truck.. looks much nicer without the black. but it doesnt work so the black panels have to remain. the dealer told me that this is common..
