Long Idle

Is it true not to idle your powerstroke for long periods? Someone told me this info. Just wanted some other opinions. Thanks for any help I can get on this. First time Power Stroker.

I work in Alaska and I have seen 7.3's run for a week only shutting down fuel due to extream cold -30 to -45f. I really don't know if it's bad or not. The techs up there say to run them at about 1300 rmps @ idle. We have idle programers on all the rigs and hour meters. But we work out of them and do it to warm up in.

Idling diesels for long amounts of time can cause unburnt fuel to build up on valve stems, called wetstacking. If you do a search for "wetstacking" or "idling" you should find quite a bit on the topic.

It's a good idea to have some form of auxillary idle control that can let you idle at a higher rev, in order to keep your exhaust gas temps high enough.

Now, having said that... some idle their's often and haven't had problems... so it's really up to you!

It's from an old Sega Genesis game I used to play with my Brother in-law when he was a youngster. The game was called PigSkin FootBrawl. A Troll would come out and take the football and score and there is nothing you can do about it, wierd but very funny. the game sound effects would yell "TROLL TROLL TROLL" and so on till he scores the touchdown.
