On the ID tag inside the drivers side door, Under axel it shows the number 17. Does anyone know what ratio this refers to. It is a 1981 F100 with I6 and manual transmission.

You have a ford 9" with 2.47 gears... OUCH!
I suppose you probably also have a SROD with them(Transmission code B.) My 81 came with that combo behind a 300 from the factory, with 215/75R15's. I can only imagine running 1400 RPM doing 60 in 4th....
Thanks for the reply. The transmission is a 3 speed manual. 3.03 RAN model I think. I have a Peterson's "Basic Clutches and Transmissions" but it was published 10 years prior to my truck. As I understand it, at that time there was two versions of the 3.03 transmission. The RAN and the RAT. The Rat version was used in V8's but that was before the IL300. At it's introduction, I'm not sure which 3 speed was used. There was also a 2.77 model 3 speed but it would not have been used. If you or any one else can add to my knowledge or correct it please do so.
The 3.03 RAN version low gear 2.99:1, 2nd gear 1.75:1 and a direct high gear.
The 3.03 RAT version low gear 2.42:1, 2nd gear 1.61:1 and a direct high gear.

Info I have here for 3.03 3-speeds used in early-model Broncos ('66-'77) indicates the V8 3.03 had a low ratio of 2.99 and the I6 3.03 had a low ratio of 3.41. I don't know how accurate this info is but it seems to agree with what I have heard about the 2 different ratio 3.03's used in Broncos since I got mine some 15 years ago. Maybe someone else here will be able to sort out the confusion.
