Petro Canada gas stations up here in canada are using an additive in all grades of their gasoline, it's called TACTROL , it claims to clean your engine while you drive, my question is ,do all gas companies use tactrol additive or does this stuff really work, or is it clever marketing?
A number of companies, over the span of my lifetime, have used additives to their gas, claiming that it "cleans as you drive". In my experience, all gas has the potential to create build-ups on the plugs and valves. It depends a lot on how the engine is running and the condition/adjustment of the carb, in my opinion.
If the engine runs rich, you are going to have a black build up in the head and at the top of the cylinder. Especially, if oil is getting by the valve guides, which on a Ford does happen, but not as often as on the .. ahem .. 350, with it's seals that go bad. If the guides are done properly when the head is rebuilt, there should be no issue for a long time. I'm not sure at all about the modular engines though. I've never even seen one of them torn down for rebuild.
