Cummins has resdesigned the injection system on their motor. I work at a training facility for CNH (Case New Holland) where they have all the new tractors and equipment, and they put the same motor that is in the Dodge in their smaller tractors. The guys there were explaining to me how they designed it, but I didn't quite catch all of it. I think the biggest thing is that it has 3 pulses from the injector, instead of one. It will pulse early, when it normally would, and then another time after that, and somehow with it doing that (and other improvments) it made the engine run a lot quieter. I'll have to ask again out there and see if they can explain it to me again.
Those engines are about as quiet as a gasser, and I've heard a couple with straight pipes and I don't think it sounds good at all!

They would be using split shot injectors, it is often more efficient, and quieter than single shots - Several small "bangs" per cylinder instead of one large "bang - Like you farmbOy I quite like the sound of a diesel, but unfortunately I think we are in the minority...

Yes, the early 03's had pilot injection and the trucks were significantly quieter. After I got my first reflash the pilot injection was gone and there was a noteable increase in sound. I was pretty bummed but it is still quieter than my 7.3 was. With the 2005's I believe the pilot injection is back. They are pretty quiet.

Soon I will imagine, injectors will most likely "pulse" fuel a couple of hundred of times into the cylinder, instead of one single shot.
This will have many benefits
Increased efficency, due to:
- More constant fuel delivery, the fuel rail will have more constant pressure
- Fuel will combust better - at no point during the combustion cycle should their be more fuel than air at a given point in the cylinder - this will amost eliminate any chance of black smoke too.
Also vehicle will be far quieter

But then again I am just guessing...

my dads company has run all three to tow concrete pumps (about 6,000lbs trailers). They realy liked the cummins for the econimy and such but hated them for the trannies, so then it was on to ford. Those have been great trucks and they still run an 04 supperduty but it likes to eat clutches for some reason (probly more the drivers trying to hot rod it). But the bosses have a pair of 04 Dmaxes. They have to say they like the fords better for power and what not but the dmax has been getting about 1-2mpg better.
