Stupid? Daytime Running Light question...
They work....the stats have been proven over and over again.

As for the nightime driving thing....your interior dash lights aren't on with DRL's.
Yes, they may be obnoxious, but that's the point.
I turn mine on after I put on my seatbelt and start my vehicle, in that order.

Remember Murphy's law of fool-proof systems?
This is Murphy's law of IDIOT-proof systems:
No matter how obvious we try to be on the roads and highways, or how careful we may be, OR HOW MUCH UNNECESSARY FUEL we burn (not to mention extra wear and tear on charging systems):
We have still done nothing whatsoever to deal with the fundamental problem of STUPID/NEGLIGENT people...
And they will always be out there...
They will pass fire trucks and rescue vehicles, speed past policeman because they see someone ELSE has already been pulled over by the unit. They will drive with bald tires during a TYPHOON with their lights out of commission and neither a drivers license nor a registration.
They will drive both drunk and stoned out of their minds, possibly tripping on LSD or worse...
They will use Club Drugs, with their spouse and children in their vehicles at the time, cursing their pshyciatric counselor for not granting some kind of a waiver for their mental status....
They will drive after their permit has been revoked when they are old because they don't believe they can be caught (It hadn't happened so far had it?) And besides (The soothing voice of unreason assures them) They can still read the very big important signs...
Such laws compensate for people who should not be on the road in the first place. In my honest opinion drivers that need such lighting should be retired from driving permanently unless they can prove themselves capable of operating a multi-thousand pound projectile in a responsible manner
It pays to be scared...
My driving record is what it is because all of the other drivers around me give me a sincere case of the "*******" - I don't even trust pedestrians, I slow down for ANYTHING that doesn't look right.
And I always look farther ahead than I need to. I want options if something goes wrong....
And if I don't see any I slow down and wait.
And the reason I do these things is because I want to be here tomorrow. Maybe that's the difference. I think about tomorrow....
I DO know that as far as accident investigators are concerned -
There IS no such thing as an unpreventable accident
I don't feel it helped at all.
