today i just had the cleanest oild change i ever had out of my 2002 f150 4.6L. it has 30,100 miles on it and i changed the oil today. it had penzoil synthetic in it and a Fram tough guard oil filter and this was the cleanest oil change i have had so far. i put the same fram filter on it and the same penzoil oil in it. i was very impressed with what came out.
I was reflecting upon your comment if the oil is the same color as it was coming out as when you put it in, you have a big problem. I am speculating that you are implying that the additive package in the oil is not doing it's job of detergent cleaning? My 89, 2.9 Liter with 120,000 miles running dino MotorCraft Oil and MotorCraft FL-1A filters seldom shows any appreciable darkening until sometimes 2200-2500 miles. I was not clear from DeckedoutF150 what the mileage or time interval was for this change. Please let us know the mileage, if it has been in there for 10-15-20 thousand miles I would agree with ford390gashog. If changed at a 3,000-5,000 mile interval think it is possible. My wife's 2000 Taurus has 23,000 miles and the MotorCraft dino oil with MotorCraft filter comes out nearly as clean at drain as the day I added it last oil change.

The clean oil coming out could mean that he's got exceptionally good ring seal, and that the oil isn't oxidizing. Of course, it could mean that there's a good thick layer of sludge on the bottom of the oil pan. As much as I dont like either Pennzoil or Fram, I think it's probably ok. Whenever anything odd like this turns up I say send in for a UOA. It's the best way to determine without a doubt what's going on.
You guys do know that synthetic oils don't break down, right? Its perfectly fine, and important that you never use any other synthetic. The polymer strings that make up the oil don't mix between manufacturers.
i was using valvoline synthetic till our good ol' friends at wall mart stopped carrying it in cases and in the 5 quart jugs, they also didnt ahve enough quarts on the shelf for me to do the oil change so i switched to penzoil. the old oil was ofcourse dark but it had a very nice dark amber color to it. valvoline would look very dark, so dark it was about black. like it didnt hold up very well. i think that my engin is running alot cleaner on the penzoil.
As much as I dislike Pennzoil...from what I've been hearing on the boards and elsewhere - their oil is pretty good. Filters are Fram (Ick!), but their oil is quite good. I'll stick to another brand - Motorcraft, Valvoline, Mobil - for things, but Pennzoil at least isn't a BAD oil.
i didn't hear what mileage you drained at. Sounds like you are changing it way too soon if its coming out clear. Also put a motorcraft filter on instead of that orange can of doom.
did u use the pennzoil synthetic blend or full synthetic and yeah by the way honeywell is the maker of fram, pennzoil, stp oil filters but on the other means i use 10w30 motorcraft with a synthetic lucas oil stabalizer it worked on raising the oil pressure, by the way the orange can of doom their have been studys that show using fram and any other off the wall brand oilfilter can cause the engine to lose 8-10lbs of oil pressure.
The biggest thing that the Fram filters lack is a good spring and anti drain back valve. Wix filters are the only ones that use a coil type spring, instead of a bent piece of metal. Wix also uses a Nitrile valve, and some higher end filters do now too.
i change my oil every 3,000 miles. the oild was a dark amber color when it is usually black with the other oil i was using. i use the penzoil full synthetic. the fram filter i am using is not orange its gray colored. its a newer line of filters from them called tough guard. its supposed to be more like a purolator pure one filter which i also like to use. the majority of people i talk to have nothing but horror stories about valvoline. especially the last one i heard about a guy my supervisor knew. said he had a ford and it was maintained very very well. they guy was very picky about it. well the guy used valvoline and later on down the road the truck had a head gasket leak. so they tore the motor down. the motor had 50,000 miles on it and the way it looked on the inside you would have thought it had 150,000 on it cause of all the sludge and varnish that was in it.

Where did you hear or read that one? Most synthetic motor oils are a mix of different base oils anyway. PAO, Group III, esters and alylated napthelenes mix just fine.
Since Pennzoil is now part of Royal Dutch Shell and Shell makes Group III "synthetic" base oils, I suspect that this oil is primarily Group III with maybe a little ester for seal compatiblity and solvency, similar to the Castrol Syntec formula.
My question is why are you changing expensive synthetic at 3000 miles? Get a decent filter and change the oil at one year or 7500. It "might" be worth it then.
i talked to a guy that worked in a lab and he said dont believe that the synthetics will go for 7,000 miles. he said keep changing it every 3,000. i also know people that will go 5,000 miles between changes. besides if the motor in that truck lasts me a long time i figure it was worth paying the $30 every oil change for the syn oil. most people pay that for a conventional oil change when they take it to one of these express lube places. so i figure why not do the oil change myself and get synthetic oil.
