Hot drums

Well, today I replaced the back shoes on my 85 F150. I also replaced all the springs in the drum as well. It all went good for both sides except when I went to put BOTH drums on each side. They were very hard to get on. I loosened the parking brake just to make sure it wasn't still grabbing. Didn't work. I have both adjusters tightened all the way.

I finally FORCED the drums on. The one side turns not too bad (some resistance). The other side is harder to turn. I drove around a bit and noticed a little smoke coming from the passenger's drum. I let it sit for an hour or so. Took it out again. I could smell the heat but there was no smoke. The drums were hot.

Why were they hard to get back on? Am I missing something? Do I need new drums?

One thing you might not have checked is if the old shoes left a groove in the drum when they wore down. If you now have a ridge you need to get the drums turned, otherwise, the shoes might fit inside the drum, but, then you are trying to force the new shoes over the ridge. Which makes getting the drum back on very hard and makes it almost impossible to properly adjust the brakes.

I was wondering that. Maybe I should just get them turned. But of course I know I will go in there and they will say "they can't be turned, you NEED new ones!" Thanks!
