I have a 77 ford f250 with a 400m. I just to the engine out to freshen it up last week end and when i put it back in the last thing i did was hooked up the battery and the selinoid started smoking. So i got a new one hooked it up but now nothing happens when i turn the key and the lights, nothing works. when i jump the posts with a plyers the engine turns over. i can't figure it out any help would be great.
thanks bulldog.
Smoking wires! Fuse links probably fried too. If any of the wiring, including the battery cables got any insullation damage, I would replace them, or at the very least inspect them very close.
I checked the links they look good. i unpluged the wires from the ignition switch and i am getting no power to any of the wires. could some one tell me witch wire is suppose to hot going to the ignition switch. would a bad voltage regulater cut off power to the ignition switch? there is a yellow wire comming off the starter selinoid big post closest to the battery. It is hot going up the the voltage regulater then i have nothing comming out. i used a test light to check the wires out. it is an automatic transmission so would the nuetral safty switch cause this problem. any help would be great.
thanks bulldog
I think hdgapeach is right. Each of the wires on the battery + side of the solinoid have fuse links on them. Use a test light and stab the wires about 6" from the solinoid end. I bet you find at least one with no power. The fuse links burn internally and may appear fine from the outside. Just buy a replacement piece from the parts store and solder it in.
There should be a wire coming off the big post like you said. Follow this wire down, and it should split into several other wires, one which is a yellow which runs toward the firewall and feeds the ignition switch. Probe this wire like the other guys said for power.
