hello
my wife tells me she just dropped the kids of in shool this morning, when she turned the expy back on the thing sounded like a diesel or old steam eng!!! with the idle going up and down what gives??? this is the first real problem has been a great trk,has 123k on the 5.4 lt eng,it sounds like its coming from the pas side lower rt side? i really dont know which way to go a little direction would be nice thanks. great site!!!!
Could be an exhaust leak at the exhaust manifold/head or were the pipes connect to the manifold. look around the exhaust pipes and connections for black soot usually the sign of a leak. Also make sure all the bolts that hold the exhuast manifold to the head are there and not loose. Enjoy the improved milage with your diesel!!
WELL GENTS
Rpl the plugs no help still sounds like a steam eng the guy that wrote that article on plug changes must be a god (45 mins my ***!!)anyway i climbed under the trk to see if there was a exaust leak and the left side muffler were it comes out of the eng the thing was RED HOT!!!! so i shut it down im kind a lost now guys! what gives no chk eng lt or abnormal inds.?
Sounds like it's time for a trip to a mechanic for proper diagnosis. I haven't heard of any instances where the pipes are glowing hot and the truck sounds like a diesel, and I've been around here for a while. I have heard dozens of exhaust leaks and none have ever sounded like a diesel engine to me.
Maybe a catalytic convertor has come apart? All those chunks inside can rattle up a storm. Maybe lifters collapsing... hard to tell when you cant hear it.
Welcome to the site! Too bad your first post is about having a serious problem.
Pre-detonation = rattle = extreme heat
I don't recall ever hearing of a timing chain issue with these engines, but it could be that your has 'jumped' a cog. You need to get the Expy to someone who can diagnose the problem for sure. If you let it go too long, damage could be severe.
Sounds like the EGR valve might be stuck open. Try tapping it and see if it corrects if it does, remove the egr valve and clean it with carb cleaner then exercise it before replacing it.
When my '97 sounded like a diesel it was because there was a vacuum leak in the PCV pipe in the ninety degree elbow that connects at the intake. The whole PCV assembly had to be replaced cause it is a single piece that includes the valve. My idle sucked too. I didn't get under the vehicle for anything, so I don't kow if anything was red hot or not. But I wouldn't doubt it if the computer tried to compensate for the vacuum leak to the point that it caused something like that to happen. Good luck!
