I just joined the website and this is my first post. I have a 97 F-150 with a 4.2 and am enjoy the power the v6 has, but as I have been reading through the posts I have been reading a lot about this year model hydrolocking. my truck only has 56,000 miles on it, but the way ya'll talk I am afaird it will not live to see 100,000. does this problem effect all 97 4.2's and after how many miles. I do not have a lot of money and could not afford a new engine is the fix cheap.
go to leakingfords.com. this site will help you. i had a 97 sc 4.2l that hydrolocked and i had it repaired to late. are you slowly losing coolent??? i would consider changing your gaskets by a professional before they let go. i had mine changed to late which allowed coolent in the oil which killed to motor. the new revised gaskets should last the rest of the trucks life if correctly installed. the mechanic needs to be very very clean during the entire process. if you can afford it let ford dealer do the work. mine had only 74000 miles when it let go. i miss that truck. a new motor runs from 2500 to 3000 plus the labor to install so you should have it checked/ replaced asap. hope i helped. just don't wanna see anyone else go through what i had to go through.
stakelinfocus- Did you end up getting a new truck? or putting a different engine into your same truck? What engine/truck did you end up having to change to?
ended up trading the truck in and bought a focus. my mechanic said that the motor had days left on it and i traded it in that day. the gasket replacement was almost 600 bucks after labor
ps got the focus cause i could not afford a f150 payment

right now just a k&n filter on the foci but will soon be looking into a borla or a magnaflow exahust. want it to have some more power just don't want a fart can on the back. have a lot of plans for it. btw i love my focus' gas milage. 30+ is a ton better then 15 i was getting with the 4.2. but i really miss my truck
