My f150 is just performing very poorly. It's my work truck (pulls landscaping trailer mainly), 5.0L TBI. Has a leak on the auto transmissions front seal. Also has an exhaust leak. now for performance problems..
Can't maintain speed on almost any hill, not even 55 mph highway use. with the pedal floored the truck still slows down. Cruise control under normal highway driving keeps the truck at WOT in every case except for going down hill. While pulling my trailer it feels like the truck skips second gear, if you dont floor it through 1st, it will shift too soon and slow down. If it does shift without flooring it through 1st, no matter how much gas you give it, there is no change in rpm, no change in sound from the motor, and no change in speed. The truck serves purpose but isnt that fun to drive. I'll be glad to hear any ideas on what the problem may be.
What does your tranny fluid look like and what is your base timing set at? When was the last time you did a tune up on it and replaced the fuel filter?
Just a thought, with a leaking exhaust, the oxygen sensor is seeing more oxygen and think it needs to add more fuel, hence possible clogging of the catalytic converter. Remove the oxygen sensor at the down pipe and test drive the vehicle and see if it runs better, not saying to leave the oxygen sensor out and run it that way, just releaving the exhaust gases out an easier direct flow. Broken Wire
It could be any number of thing, including several things mentioned above. Things I would do first is give it a tune up, including plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and filters, then check the timing and have an exhaust shop check the cat. You also might want to think about having the tranny flushed. Also, have the codes pulled from the computer. They can steer you in the right direction.
BTW - TBI is a chebby thing. Ford trucks use multi-port fuel injection.
It was tuned up not long ago, the beginning of summer. But I'll check the timing, I had the codes pulled earlier this year and there werent any. I thought this had tbi, its what it feels like when I drive it. But im used to sequential port injection. Oh well, guess I goofed hehe
