Deer meat

My neighbor was very generous and gave me a gallon sized zip-lock back full of deer meat. I've never cooked it before and was wondering if anyone had any good recipes they wanted to share?

Really, anything you can make with beef you can make sith deer meat. Regardless of what you make, you WILL taste a difference. My m-i-l makes GREAT deer chili.

OK, one of my favorite ways to eat deer meat is this:

Cut meat into 1" cubes.

Put 5 or 6 cubes on a wooden shish-ka-bob stick. (Did I even get close to spelling that right???)

Drop stick into deep fryer until meat is cooked through.

Sprinkle on the garlic salt or garlic powder.

Enjoy with an ice cold adult beverage of your choice!

I couldn't tell you how many pounds of deer meat I have consumed this way...I love it!

My experience is that deer meat (unless ground with some fat pork or beef) is extremely DRY. For that reason CHILI is the best way to serve it.

Old Favorite :

There are many ways to enjoy venison and most anything done with other meats can be followed .

One of my Grandmothers long time stand buys , for whom venison was one of their main meats in her day , was to wafer the frozen meat very thin with a sharp knife and stew it in it's own gravy in a cast iron skillet with a lid .

A little salt and pepper or your favorite spice and I've found this remains one of my favorite methods to consume more of it than I should .

Better check the 38/55 as I can almost taste it now .

I don' know how to make jerky, but my favorite way to eat deer meat is to coat a thin sliced steak in flour and seasoning salt and fry it (like "chicken fried steak" ) up with some sliced onions, red peppers and potatoes. If you have remains to make gravy, that all ways tops it off great.
I've got to get ready for hunting!!

You can make jerky out of venison the same way you would with other meats, find the recipe you like, cut the meat thin while it is partially forzen, marinade for how long the recipe calls, put a toothpick through the end, hang from the oven rack, turn on the broiler, and let them slow cook

We marinate ours overnight in some homemade wine or Montreal steak seasoning, then grill or broil it. mostly though we use ground venison for burgers (have to either add pork or beef to the meat for fat content, keeps it from getting dry/burning). We also have some made into smoked hotdogs.

I'll second (or third?) the venison chili, and add venison stew to the list. Cooked in a crockpot all day long...mmm

Venison Jerky.........my favorite jerky, and my favorite way with venison.
reminds me....time to renew the huntin lisc.
Terriaky (sp) sauce all night long......oven a 150-200* till good and dry. Remember to leave the oven door slightly open so it can dry out.
Many many jerky methods on the net.

Anybody ever grill the ribs?

Jerky and Stew are my favorites... I also had a venison burger that was darn good, but I'm pretty sure that it was mixed with beef or pork or something as well...
