Transmission acting up.

The vehicle is a 1998 F-150 Lariat 4.6l with automatic transmission (with overdrive - exact transmission model number is not known - if you know can you provide me the model number).

I bought the truck with 54K on it. Now it has 82k. Recently the transmission will sometimes hesitate when accelerating from a stop. I push the gas and it goes nowhere. A second later the transmission grabs and I take off.

A similar situation occasionally occurs when braking then accelerating. The transmission will hesitate then grab.

Any advise as how to remedy this problem?

Thanks,
Pbsterling

It's a 4R70W transmission.

The first thing to check is the transmission fluid level and color. If it's low of dark, it could cause this problem. If it's low, but still clear and red, add fluid a pint at a time until it's full. If it is dark, change the fluid in the transmission and torque converter.

There is a good article in the Tech Articles on how to change it yourself, or many places can do a complete fluid change for you.

I went and saw the tranny doctor this morning. The guy was highly recommended by the motorheads here in my office. The tranny doc said the fluid was at the proper level and was in excellent condition - which is bad. The subsquent test drive revealed to the tranny doc that my forward clutch is on its last legs. My F-150 goes into surgery Wednesday morning.

Regards PB.
