Idling Issues

I need some help trouble shooting this issue. I'm taking my truck in for an oil change tomorrow and would like to intelligently describe my idling issues to the Service Manager.

Here are the symptoms: I'm sitting at a light and I notice that the RPMs are increasing by 100+ RMPS while in gear (overdrive). You can hear the engine revving for short 5-second intervals. It's happening intermittently and only while in gear; seems to idle fine when in neutral.

Can anyone coach me on what I should be telling the Service Manager so I don't sound like a complete fool? Is this description fitting any know issues you all are aware of?

Check back through the day and see if we can get you some answers, IMO this is a software issue, if no other problem with the truck is appearing….no boots issues, no anything else?
Have you ever turned the engine off and restarted it at the stoplight and noticed it quit?

There are at least three Ford bulletins out regarding surging. Two suggest the latest flash. One is as follows:

6.0 Rolling/Rough Idle (surge/lope) After Hot Restart:
Engineering is investigating a concern of an erratic idle after a hot restart. The condition may clear up on throttle tip-in. Currently there is no fix for this condition. If a truck exhibits these symtoms, unplug the engine oil temp sensor to see if the idle stabilizes. If it does, do not attempt a repair. Disconnecting the EOT sensor eliminates the initial injector actuation of the split shot sequence. Engineering has found that the cause of the rough idle is a problem in the programming for the initial injection.

Good luck.

03 cc 6.0 with 38,742 miles- Runs fantastic with the one very minor exception...
I occasionally experience a similar idling (up & down rpms) to what ClubDrof described. However, it happens infrequently and only when the engine is relatively cold- Never after reaching full operating temp or on hot re-starts. Although only when in gear. I do have the July flash and other than this one extremely minor item, this truck runs better than when it was new: My DuraMax & Cummins 600 friends agree!

Yeah, the later flashes sure fix that problem: No pilot injection, no problem!

I agree that if you have idle issues, you should get updated with the latest software by the dealer. If you *still* have idle issues after that, then make sure the dealer knows it and passes the word back to Ford that they haven't found all the idle problems yet! (Your surging idle description sounds more like old bad software than the stumbling idle which is often wire chafing problems.)

I've turned the engine off and restarted it...it's not doing anything to stop the issue.

I noticed while doing 65 in cruise control that the engine is pulsing noticeable within the cab. Later on at a light I noticed that the normal lifter sound was completely muted. This is not a normal thing from what I'm used to...it was so quiet it sounded like a gasser more than a diesel. Once I gave it a little fuel, the lifters would start clattering but as soon as I hit another light and idled it was quite as mouse again.

I have no idea what is happening and Ford claimed there servers were down when I was in for service; they couldn't flash my computer.

Now THAT sounds like an EBP sensor going out....

quick test - disconnect the EGR vavle control wire off the top of your engine as posted in the egr disconnect thread...

bet it stops doing that !!!

and you may forget to hook it back up like I did mine couple of months ago
