I changed out the Idle Air Control Valve it seemed to help some but I still have a surge in the idle and when I step on the gas the motor surges. What else can I look for? I am thinking about doing a Superchips.
Check the mass air sensor, take the air filter intake apart till you can see the sensor.Spray some starting fluid on the wire element to clean any oil or build up off. let it dry for a few minutes and put it all back together.A chip will not solve a surging problem unless you have changed a bunch of stuff and the calibrations are off.A bad throttle position sensor will do the same thing also.
Hum well here is another part of the problem. I took the rig to Auto Zone to get the code read. The reader would not power up and the motor would not start until we disconnected the code reader. So that did not help. Next step disconnect the battery for an hour to see if resetting the computer would work. No go there either. Is the mas air sensor the one that stick out of the side of the rubber boot that goes to the air cleaner? If so how do you take it out?
Yeah right before the air cleaner, just open up the filter housing and look inside the part still going to the motor. You will see the thin wires in the sensor, do not touch them or damage them, that is why i suggest just spraying them as compared to cleaning with a q-tip like some do.
That's a good tip. My truck surged real bad one time, andf then it died and would not run. I looked everywhere, and about 3 hours later I looked onside the mass air meter and found a little piece of fuzz stuck in the element. I took it out, and the truck started and ran great.
OK well I found what you were talking about, I took the bands loose and removed the rubber boot. Inside I found two small wires with bulb on the end protected by a plastic D ring. I cleaned the sensor and reinstalled everything but the problem remains. Spark plugs?

Thats just not right, even a cheep code reader should have worked. You may have a bad ECM or a short in the diagnostic port wiring.
Any ideas on where one might down load wiring information on the data port?
It will have to be someone at a dealer ship or a scan from workshop manuals. I can access it at work but not from home.I don't remember the per pin info.(Ford won't let me have home access
Have you tried unplugging the idle air control valve wires while the engine is running to see if it still surges???? I just had the same problem and when I unplugged the wires on the IAC, the surges stopped. After cleaning it with carb cleaner and disconnecting the battery to reset the computer...surge is gone.
That was the first thing I replaced. I called Damon and they redirected me to Ford and they redirected me to Helm and they sent me to Freightliner. But still no one has a pin out or wiring diagram for the diagnostic port.
