2.8 rod bearings

I'm trying to get a set of rod bearings for my 84 ranger 2.8L. Napa told me that year and engine is a German Ford. They only sell the standard size. I need an oversize. So I went to a Ford dealer and they pulled up the part number and they too said all they can get me is the standard size. They seemed confused because usually you can buy .10, .20, .30 and so on oversised bearings. Has anyone had this issue? How about this German ford thing. I'm new to working on Fords.

Yes, Ford did have a 2.8L engine built in what was then West Germany by Fordwerk of Germany. It was used in Mustang II's as well.

The NAPA store may have been correct; however, NAPA recently changed suppliers of their engine bearings from Federal-Mogul to Clevite. I am NOT trying to insult the counterman, but the new Clevite--NAPA line code CEB--beearing catalog gives the basic part number for a standard bearing. The oversize dimensions--if available--makes up an addition to the part number. If the part number was CB123P, then an oversize would be CB123P010.

You might wish to go to NAPA's online site: www.napaonline.com. and check this out yourself. It will be under engine parts and then the subcategory engine bearings. Then, of course, it is further divided into camshaft, balance shaft, rod, and main.

I hope this is of some help to you!!

I went to the website that NAPA has to check on those numbers for you, ryan-iroc, and the CEB part number for the rod bearings is CB723P. That is, of course, the Clevite number; I also checked to see if they showed it in Beck Arnley Worldparts, but they did not.
You may wish to check with your NAPA store and see if the oversize is not listed as CB729P010. However, not all of the oversizes are so sensibly numbered. It MAY be a different set of digits behind the letter "P". For example, some of the newer numbers show the digits 040 for an .010 oversize bearing dimension. No, it isn't exactly simple nor even sensible; but, hey, I didn't come up with the numbers...LOL. I do not have one of the NAPA parts DVDs for my home computer system. IF you wish, I can check it out for you on Monday when I go back to work; I will be glad to do so, if you'd like.

Ryan, thinking about your need for the oversize rod bearings for your 2.8L had me worried. As it turns out, I have a copy of the NEW NAPA Clevite engine bearing catalog here at the house.

In catalog number 2-200-03, Ford engine section, pages 224 and 225, your engine is listed in block number 36.

The rod bearings for your engine ARE number CB723P. They are available std, 10, 20, 30, and 40. Just to try to cover the bases for you if, when you tear into the engine, you find the mains are needing oversize bearings as well, the part number is MS1983P. These, too, are availabe in std, 10, 20, 30, and 40. That number is specific to the 2.8 L TRUCK ENGINE!! The thrust washer was different in truck and car German 2.8s.

I surely hope that helps you out, Ryan!!
