Looking at a 95 Bronco to buy. It is a nice truck, and has been owned by a co worker who always takes care of his stuff, but the wife hates the steering. I know the Fords twin beam fronts tend to wonder a bit, [I have a 93 E150 van] but this seems pretty bad. All seems tight, and it is loosest at low speeds. After around 50mph, it seems to tighten up. The truck has 125K on it, and has 4 brand new[ok less then 20K any way] 31 10.5 tires. Any thing to look for? Is there a stabelizer kit that may help a bit? It has it good points[looks REAL nice, with just a touch of rust, and a good price] and it's bad points[Poor MPG, and a touch small compaired to the van] but the steering seems to be the deal breaker. Any help would be great. Thanks a lot!!!!
a steering stablilizer should help out, although I have yet to bolt mine on and try it out. poly bushings should also tighten things up a bit. The reason it gets tighter at high speeds is the gyroscopic effect of the wheels. They want to stay straight when spinning. kinda like how it's so easy to maintain balance on a motorcycle at speed. Of course, crappy tires would tend to counter the gyro effect at speed since they follow imperfections in the road surface... but i digress
you might also check fluid and pressure levels of the power steering system. having 125k miles, it could need some maintenance done on that system, or even repair if no maintenance has ever been done. just my 2 pesos
where can i get those poly radius arm bushings? I went to the dealer and they wanted like 40 bucks for each side? I never knew it was going to be that much $$$ for the stock rubber, I might as well upgrade to poly if I'm going to spend that kinda cash. let me know. thanks.
broncograveyard.com has them for most trucks, and 4WheelParts has them, but I can't find it on the website. I am fortunate enough to have a 4WP store about 7 miles away, so I can just stop in and pick stuff like this up.
thanks. ordered them just now from Jeff's bronco Grave yard for $18.00 for both? i told the guy on the phone that it sounded too cheap but he laughed when i told him the dealer price. sounds too good to be true but we'll see wehn they arrive. thanks again.
those are the Daystar ones, right? they should do just fine. And yeah, polyurethane is cheap to produce, so $18 is realistic. The dealers just like ripping people off. For instance, the spring hanger that is the focal point of my current project cost me just over $50 with tax from the dealer. truckspring.com has them for $25. jerks
well I bought the truck today. Got a set of poly bushings coming for it, less then $20, and got a new frame bracket coming also, the old one is all egged out. Time to start cutting those rivets.
oh man... the rivets can be real bas-terds. at least that's the stumbling block in my current project. Of course, if I had a cutting torch I would be finishing my project instead of posting right now
First Bronco, but many Fords. Had a 84F250hd, and have a 93e150 van now, and a boat load of cars.[big projets are my 70Mustang, and 72 LTD convertible]
Looking foward to getting to work on this. Need to do this, shocks, and REALY want to dump those darn auto hubs.YUCK!!! Thanks for the help, I am sure you will hear a lot from me.
