i'm not that knowledgable on the mechanics of engines. i enjoy dabbling around with friends that are mechanics. i've always understood more CID equals greater HP and TQ. i talking to a freind about stroking my 400 and he insisted that a shorter stroke has the potential to make more torque and a longer stroke makes more horse power. now this guy is not a mechanic and i wouldn't let him work on my truck, but hes one of those guys that knows about alot things about automobiles in general. so does what he said hold true to my disbelief?
also, a long stroke engine will produce lots of low end torque and tend to not want to rev extremely high. a short stroke engine will be able to rev higher because of less centrifugal mass, and will need to rev higher than a long stroker to make it's power. think of a regular hand ratchet(short stroke) and a breaker bar (long stroke).
the 351m and 400 have the same block, same heads, same everything EXCEPT for the crankshaft, and pistons. They Have the same bore at 4.00 inches, but the stroke for the 351m is 3.5 inches, and the 400m has a stroke of 4.00 inches, making more torque
i'm going to ditto what these guys have said. Long stroke is good for low end torque but does not take the high revs. Shorter stroke engines can give more horsies at higher rpms but you won't produce the low end torque. Your friend does have it backwards
