02 Excursion 4x4 limited front locking hubs disassemble

I've broken down the hub up to the housing and the outer selector for auto or lock. Mine has this black bladder or rubber protective boot on the backside of the selector which I haven't seen on others when guys take them apart on youtube. Two issues is how do I get the selector separated from the housing because I've tried turning it back to the o and c on lock that I saw on one video and what is that black bladder thing

Per guzzle, if you read far enough you'll see that is the bladder he refers to when he says to not try and disassemble due to damage risk.

Guzzle's info is spot on and I followed it when I redid mine. Unfortunately, I had to clean them several times and on at least one occasion I used too much grease, which causes them not to be able to move, especially when cold (which is when I need them). I've seen at least one video stating that the outer lock handle can be removed by turning past the unlocked position, but I was never able to replicate that. Mine were so stuck on the outside that I had to use a pair of pliers to rotate them. Once I had the internals cleaned and greased properly, they worked as advertised and I didn't need to lock/unlock them by hand. I tried spraying them with WD40 several times and working them back and forth, to little effect, and any gains had by that disappeared during or after the following winter.

In the end, my desire to have automatic 4WD went away and I'm changing over to full manual, so for me it's not really an issue any more as I went with a set of Warn Premiums.

Here is the article I wrote up about the disassembly. Please note that mine had the autos replaced with factory manual hubs. I would imagine the disassembly would have to be similar.
