Question detroit locker Question(s)

Ok,
Im curious to something. Had an argument with a couple friends a couple weeks ago.
Is a regualr detroit locker ( not electric or one the driver has to hit a switch or something to activate) always locked, since they have no clutch packs?
Or do they let go when going around a corner, Whats the scoop with this.
One of my buddies has detroit front&rear, when normal driving, i have yet to hear his tires chirp going around corners and what not. But getting bent on gravel both tires are spinning. Im confused.

I dlike to know if i was right or they were right.

WIth a Detroit, both axles are locked to the diff case, except that when going around a corner, the outside axleshaft is allowed to overrun (spin faster than) the ring gear/diff case and the inside shaft. It is a ratcheting mechanism. No tire can spin slower than the diff case, but any tire is welcome to spin faster if it wants to. It is normal to hear the clicking of the ratcheting mech when making a tight turn and it is normal to hear the clunk when it engages when going from decelerating to accelerating. Depending on the weight of the vehicle and traction of the tires, it's very easy to chirp the tires in a right hand turn with a locker in the rear.
