I just got my new truck 2 weeks ago and so far I am happy with the performance, cab quietness and comfort, the vehicle build date is 3/04. Should I be concerned with any problem as this may have an engine date late 03? I haven't had a chance to verify the date yet. I keep hearing in the forums about flash updates, what are these and are they neccessary to keep up to date? My last truck had the 7.3L IDI, no computer, no problems. Also would like to spruce up the engine area with a cold air intake setup, any particular model better than the next? And will I be happy with the results. Any help would be appreciated.

Your truck should have a 'true' 04 engine with a build date of 3/04.. The later build engines had the most changes.. Around 30 improvements.. Ford uses a build 'as needed' program, and doesn't have months of engines laying around to be installed.. Your engine was probably built 30 days or so before the truck build.. If that.. Flashes are 'reprogramming' for the PCM, TCM ect. and are 'in design' to make for better running/driveabilty conditions, as well as for transmission strategies/shifts ect... If yours runs/drives well, I wouldn't worry about a flash or future flashes.. There's alot of info. and owner opinion about intakes/air cleaners.. Do a search here at FTE, and check the internet about flow numbers, element type ect. as far as washable/replacement.. Give Motorhaven a shot when concidering a purchase.. They make this site possible...
the '04 is much improved over the '03. I had losted my '03 in a flash flood this last July 2004. I replaced it with a '04 and noticed the differents in power, ride and drivably. I'm very happy that bought another F250/6.0/ext. cab/lb.
