Incorrect Tranny info
Anyway, I went to Ford today to have them run my VIN through OASIS...no warranty activity - I didn't know OASIS only reflects warranty work done in the last 12 months.
But the print-out did show the drivetrain info - I have an E4OD tranny - which disappointed me somewhat, since I'd read the 4R100 (correct me if I'm wrong) is the "heavy-duty" tranny to have. I DO have the 3.73 Limited Slip rear-end... that made me happy! At least it's not TOO wimpy
I changed the oil today and REALLY like the oil filter remotely mounted under the bumper/fender - EASY to remove/install without much mess
Next job to tackle is the spark-plug change - MAN that looks REALLY daunting! Now I know why everyone dreads it!!!
Another thought - my brother insists that Mercon V is an ugrade to (supercedes) Mercon and can be used in those trannys that originally called for Mercon. I know there have been posts to the contrary...don't remember who posted them.
Is there HARD evidence that Mercon V shouldn't be run where Mercon is called for?
Best Regards and a BIG thanks to ALL for your help/advice...I know what I get stuck or have a question, y'all are always there!
Now I feel a little stupid - it appears an E40D and 4R100 are the same tranny...is that right?

My transmission has 101k miles on it anyway, so I guess from that perspective, it's not like I'm going to be doing something REALLY great for it by switching to Mercon V, but I do believe in the advantages of synthetic or blend over conventional oils. Pretty much like everyone except those in the labs doing the actual testing, I guess I'm just putting faith in the advertising. Yes...I realize it could all be hype to get me to spend more money when I don't really need to...but I've heard so many "testimonials" from people about improved fuel economy, extended life for drivetrain components lubed with synthetic, etc.
What I haven't heard are many people saying that synthetic or blend (Mercon V) has destroyed or shortened the life of a trans that calls for Mercon.
I'm going to the Ford dealership this morning for some spark plugs...I'll ask the service guys what they think about it.
I'll let you know what I find out...maybe they can give me some written guidance from FMC that specifically states Mercon V is an acceptable substitute.
I'm still flip-flopping on this issue...until I find out something definitive.

For those who may not like to follow links, it says to NOT use Mercon V in an E4OD.

The Ford tech here says to use Mercon in the E4OD as others have posted...
That seals it for me...and besides (like the Ford tech said) Mercon is cheaper
