I don't know how to explain what is happening to where you can understand, but I will try. I have an '04 6.0 with the 6 speed. Sometimes, not all of the time, if I am driving along and say I am in 3rd gear around 2000 rpm everything is o.k.. If I speed up a little bit to about 2500 or so (say to pass a little car, or anything else ) and have to back off a little bit, I get a lurch, or hick up in the motor. I don't really know how to explain it. But If I get back into it it goes away and seems fine. Or if I let off completely it seems fine again. The hick up or whatever it is, almost feels like it hit a rev limiter or something. If I never let off, I've never had a problem.
I wonder if it is something with the boost, or something along that line. Sorry, I don't have a boost gauge (or gage as Ford likes to say ) so I don't know what that is doing. I haven't seen or heard of anything like that from what I've read here....but maybe I didn't look in the right spot. Thanks for any feedback!

Hey Bubba,

This could be two things in my opinion. The good part would be it is a normal function of the truck as the turbo is effectively blowing off all the unused boost it made when you accelerated and let off quickly. Is there a noise accompanied with this? Try duplicating it on a quiet road with no radio or anything else. If there is sort of a blow off noise, like compressed air then that is most likely what is happening. This is again, completely normal. On the other hand, there is a new condition this is starting to be found in some trucks. To my knowledge this affects all 6.0s. It is described as a droan between 1500-2500rpms. The cause of this droan is engine firing pulses that cause the turbo mount to vibrate. They have came up with a revised pedestal. First again listen for the noise. If you believe it to be the droan issue let me know. I will give you a TSB and Broadcast number to take to your dealer for reference. Even if you believe it is turbo blow-off. If you could just let me know either way. It would be nice to hear back from someone for once.

Best of Luck,
Corey

Corey, the moan/drone symptom has been around since Ford started using the 6.0. I have a late March 03 built engine and it had it. Do a search on moan or drone (some spelled it droan) and read away. The fix has been out on the 03 for a while. Apparently a new turbo pedestal has been released for the 04's.

You are right on the flutter if that is what he is experiencing.

Sorry I haven't replied. Been to busy to even check computer lately, sorry. I'll have to try and see if it does it when I head home from work this morning. Then I'll see if I hear anything. I'll try to reply again Monday night. I'm hoping it's not the droan that people have, I don't think it is because this happens at around 2500-2800 rpm. I think it is along the lines of boost blow by. Also, it only seems to do it in 1st and 2nd gear. Very rarely in 3rd. And never in 4th or 5th.

Thanks for the info and I'll let you know what I hear this morning.
