I have an 86 Ranger 2.3L. After I drive at highway speeds for 10 minutes or more, I get off the freeway, stop at the stop light, then when I try to go again the engine dies. It idles fine before I push on the throttle.
The manager at Advance Auto parts says it's most likely the throttle position sensor. If not that then possibly two other sensors. One had something to do with the intake air temp and the other had something to do with the water temp. He said these three sensors send a signal to the computer after the engine warms up.
Any thoughts? Any other info you need to narrow it down or should I just replace the sensor and see what happens next?
Thanks a lot,
MARK
Autozone pulls codes in hopes of you buying parts from them. Before buying any parts, you need to do the diagnostics. Throwing parts at it in hopes of the better can be expensive and frustrating. I think your model year uses EEC-IV, and in that case you can pull the codes without a scanner.
I went ahead and pulled the codes myself. I kept getting an 11, and 18 with the O test and 11, 13 and 25 with the R. I know 11 means pass and 18 is the SPOUT open but 13 has something to do with ISC and TPS. I went ahead and replaced the TP sensor and fuel pressure regulator since I had one already.
Now I'm getting 23 and 13 during the R test and 13, 23, 25 during O.
And I'm still killing the engine after getting off the freeway. Should I replace the ISC next? I can return the TPS to the store. I was already given permission to so I'm not just wasting money.
Thanks,
MARK
I would run the pinpoint tests for the codes before spending money replacing something that still good. Let me know if you need a copy, I can email them to you.
Yes, email me the codes please.
Also, I read in my Haynes manual that the Throttle Position Sensor has to be "adjusted" properly. Do you know what the Ohm reading is suppose to be? The guy at advance auto parts said that was most likely my problem. I know I can keep adjusting until the error 13 goes away but I'd rather not.
Thanks again,
MARK
