Stick shift - need innformation asap, please

I'm ready to get my new truck, but they must order the
6 Speed for me. I really need to know if anyone out there
has the 6 speed and do you like it?

I've always had a manuel Transmission, but ford must order
the stick shift for me since they only have automatic's. Does
anyone have any advice about the manuel tranny. If you have
a manuel trans do you like driving the truck?

Lorenzo

Lorenzo, I ordered the 6 spd with my 04 450, 6.0 and love it. I've always had the manuals, and really like this set up with the 13" clutch. Good luck.....

Thanks for the information.. I really need it since I'm down to
ordering and the only thing I'm un-decided on is the trans. I've
always driven a stick shift and that's why I'm leading this way.

The dealer only has automatic's and said I must order the stick
shift. I'm going to get all the bells and whisles in this truck since
it's going to be the last vechicle that I buy for a long time. I
drive to fresno often so this is why I want the diesel.

Again, thanks guys for all the information since I've been reading
and searching allot in the last few days trying to decide the pro's
and con's. I'm going to read all that I can and then I'll post what
I've decided on.

Good luck with your decision. I'm sure you'll be happy with either one.

Posted this in your other one as well:

I like the 6 speed and would not have an Auto. I had one once....don't think I'll do it again...however everyone is different. What are you going to use the truck for? Driving around town or mainly freeways? Towing in the mountains or offroading? There are +'s and -'s to each. Here are some of the reasons I like manuals:

More efficent (sp)
I get to choose what gear I want the truck in...not vice versa
Better for offroad use
Less complicated
Easier to work on
Last longer
Takes more abuse
Low gear (Granny Low)

Hi Lorenzo:

I have an 03 4x4 f-350 5.4 with the ZF S6-650 (diesel engines get the ZF M6HD transmission), and I'm not happy with it! It behaves as though the clutch doesn't fully disengage, with these symptoms and problems :
1. Audible "bump" with slight forward motion of truck when shifting from neutral to 1st.
2. High shift effort with audible synchro "whine" when shifting from 1st. to 2nd. and 2nd. to third, at any engine speed above 2300 rpm. Effort and whine increase with engine speed.
3. Gear clash (grinding) when shifting over bumpy surfaces.

I strongly encourage you to test drive this transmission(if you can find a truck so equipped, and good luck!) before buying it.

Oh, one more thing I don't like is the clutch action: The engagement range is really short! If this is normal behavior for this tranny, then some redesign is certainly in order. I'd be interested in hearing from others who own a truck equipped with this transmission.

The gasoline models get the standard-torque S6-650 and the diesels get the high-torque S6-650. Same tranny, different gear sets. Clutch engagement is half the total travel of the pedal on my truck. Sounds like either your clutch fluid is low or it's leaking somewhere. Or you're not pressing the clutch pedal all the way, or aren't able to but that's less likely. Hmmm, 1,2 & 3 always happen when my wife "drives", never when I do.
Anyhow, it took a good year to break my tranny in as it would just refuse to go in 2nd half the time but now, it's smoother than an automatic and makes no noise while shifting. I can shift if smoothly all the way to 5000 RPM. I'm glad I waited for it to break in (and not gotten rid of it), I wouldn't trade it for anything else. I replaced the oil with Mobil 1 Synth ATF at 5000 miles which made it smoother and a little quieter.

I have an 04' F-350 V-10, 6-speed, with the 4:30 ls,,it is a great combo, I love the tranny,,I have not driven the Torqeshift auto,,but I had an auto in my 99' PSD,,while it never let me down,,it felt sluggish, shifted kinda weird, and mileage was not that good.

I like this 6-speed,,shifts nice, no noise, good gear splits, better economy,
I even plow snow with mine and it does great.

Only thing I would ask,,Does the 6.0 L use the dual-mass flywheel on it,,????
I had a 95 PSD, 5-speed,,with the dual-mass flywheel, It had to be replaced.

Does anybody know if they use the Dual-mass fly wheel on the 6.0 L engine with the 6-speed ????

Later,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Mark

I think so, judging from the What's New for 2003 article:

6.0L Power Stroke® V8 Turbo Diesel Engine – Other Features and
Benefits
• Dual Mass Flywheel Available on Manual F-250/350
- Reduced Driveline Noise
- Improved Shift Characteristics

Well, my truck is now ordered so there's no changing it now.
I went with the manuel transmission, basically because I love
them. So it's a waiting game now, but I'm happy with my
purchase and cannot wait to get my hands on it.

But, this gives me time to read the forums and maybe order
some custom grill or other stuff. The colors really nice which
is that Dark Shadow Grey Metallic, 4x4, Diesel 6.0, Sliding
rear window, Alarm, Tinted windows, Bucket seats + center
consol, Dark Flint dash, Short Bed etc. I'm going to get the
bed Rihno Lining sprayed when I get it.

But, anyways... I purchased the manuel tranny

Lorenzo,

I too have the 6 speed (with the diesel). I love it! If you've always had manuals and are used to them you will not regret it. The only thing I noticed at first is the gear pattern seems a little different at first but once you get used to it it's not a problem!
Enjoy!

I have the 6 speed in my truck with the 5.4 and 4.10's and think it's great. It makes a little noise and is kind of tricky to get into R or Low but don't mind that at all. For a manual trans these things are huge and have a built in oil cooler...very heavy duty. The Low gear coupled with 4Lo is a 2-3mph crawl which has come in handy a few times. First through OD is smooth but will take a little getting used to the tight shift gates.

You will like it.
