If it's a stocker and you're backing down alot with the engine I think 4000 sounds like plenty. If it was just a matter of running hard through the gears 4500 should be reasonable. With a worked engine 5500 or more depending on what was done on the bottom end is obtainable. There is no magic number though, especially if you take into account tolerances on the engine build. You could have one engine right in the middle of all the tolerances that seems to go like crazy without a problem and another one that is at the outer ends of all the tolerances and won't run as well or as far as the other one.
