Major Vehicle Vibration

Hi,

I've got an '88 Bronco II that's doing a very odd thing which is beginning to worry me. I am taking it to get looked at today but I would like to hear anyone else's opinions on the problem. As of the last week or so it has begun to vibrate/bounce as if I were going across a very bumby road when I am simply driving down well maintained highways, roads, etc. It seems to do it more at slower speeds. A buddy of mine says it is most likely something to do with the suspension which rather frightens me. Does anyone have any idea what's up with my truck?

Andrea

Most likely the bolts for the driveshaft have loosen up, check the ones at the rear diff first. I forget the torque spec., but, if you can get under there and turn them fairly easily with a 1/2 wrench and socket then they are loose! The best thing is to take them all out one end at a time, clean the holes, and reinstall with red lock-tite to torque specs.. Takes a 12 point socket.

When our truck did this, we had to tighten the wheel bearings. This has happened with 2 of our Bronco II's, so they must just wear out. Also, check your tire balance, you'd be amazed at what one of those weights will do if it shifts. Angel

Tire weights will cause a vibration at highway speeds, wheel bearings may cause it at any speeds, though the faster you go the less apearant it will be. Drive line bolts will cause the drive line to be out of balance which will cause an unmistakable center-flex vibration. One thing no one has mentioned yet would be a bent axle. A bent axle will cause more of a vibration, much like wheel balance, at lower speeds. Check the driveline bolts, I would not recomend Lock-Tite if you ever want to get the drive line out easily again though. Replace or at least repack the wheel bearings, have the tire balance checked, and last but not least have someone drive behind you to watch your tires. If they see the tire move at the top or bottow like a wobble, than you more than likely have a bent axle.

> I would not recomend Lock-Tite

They came from the factory that way.

Use the blue medium strength Loctite if your concerned about getting it apart later. Since the hardware has no lock washers or anything to keep it from loosening, I would use it.
