Transmission Fluid Change - When?

I have a '97 V6 4.0 SOHC Explorer with 97000 miles. I assume the tranny fluid has never been changed. Truck runs fine. Should I change the fluid now? What is the change interval? Truck is not used for towing. How much for a shop to change?

Thanks, Phil

Its due for a change. The usual is around 60K miles. The price varies but Id expect to pay about $150.

I had a Chevy blazer with about 100K miles and look it for a Trans flush,,well after they flushed it, the trans went out. Literally would not make it out of the parking lot.

I have heard that if you are way over due for a flush, the old fluid acts like a glue (all the shavings) and when you flush it, you are SOL. (like I was)

My $59.99 flush turned into a $1,500 new tranny.

This has been debated back and forth many times. Ive heard from very reliable sources that this should not happen much at all. It is a consideration but the alternative is not very attractive either (dirty fluid forever WILL destroy your tranny too). Get it flushed and hope for the best.
