My starter is wacky again. '62 292 engine. Engine starts fine, but the starter won't disengage, and wants to run with the engine. Last time I started it, there were very bad noises. Shut it off, crawled under the truck and small shards of metal were on the floor, so I yanked out the starter, and sure enough, some of it's teeth were chipped. It's been working pretty well up until now, and was rebuilt a few months ago. I can see the flywheel teeth marks in the center of the starter teeth, so it seems to have been doing it's thing properly (I assume) until just recently. I'm wondering if there is a wiring/voltage problem thing, due to the stuff being somewhat questionable at best. Thanks for your input.
Sounds like your starter drive spring may be weak. I'd ask where you had it rebuilt if they did anything with the drive. They may have just worked on the motor itself. Either way, you most likely need a new drive as it's not returning to the resting position. The only other thing that comes to mind is perhaps your starter solonoid is sticking or your key switch is faulty.
The starter had been completly gone thru - I know it was because the drive was different when I got it back. Mr. repairman said the solenoid was probably at fault, so I replaced it today, but the starter is still in the shop; I'll wait somewhat patiently for the phone call. The old solenoid had a couple loose terminals, so I'm hoping for an easy fix here. Also did some better wiring while under the hood. Let'cha know what happens - thanks!
pull the small start wire of the solinoid and use a test light have a freind turn the key to start and run positions to make shure your not getin any 'stray' voltage goin to it that would keep the solinoid engaged.and you could also check to make shure the nose of the starter is the rite one i had one that was spose to be for a standerd but it was an auto nose or vise versa did the same thing it put the bolt holes at a different angle
