2005 PSD Acceleration Lag

While test driving a 2005 F250 6.0, I took a left at an intersection and much to my surprise, when I hit the pedal, the truck slowly crawled into the intersection, in front of traffic that I would have otherwise beaten easily, and after what seemed like a while (probably 2-3 seconds at most), the truck took off without adjusting the pedal. And it really took off. A little scary on both ends. It did not do that any other time during my 30 minute test drive.

It must not have bothered me too much as I ordered one that day, but what the heck?

I've seen a few other remarks about that here ("some have it and some don't") and was wondering how many people are having the same issue with their 2005s.

Mine only seems to have it, if I floor it from a dead stop, I don't notice it any other time.

Thanks Tim. It's good to be here....well in 4 weeks that is.

Should I read into your post that the lag is part of the 6.0 world?

I've driven about 5-6 05's and they didn't seem to have any more turbo lag than my 03.. SOME lag is normal, and holding the brake for a second, and light throttle will build some boost before a launch and will 'ensure' a clean shot through an intersection.. Got on it on a few of them, and they all ran well.. Better shifting than mine.. Maybe a 'hikup' or a glitch, but 'just to be safe' you better drive another one for comparision.. Congrats on the new ride...

ON ANY turbo charged vehicle there will be some turbo lag...
do a search on turbo lag... it's a oft discussed topice which CAN be eliminated with two things....

My 04 sure had it bad until I unhooked the EGR, much better after that.

There's turbo lag, and then there's computer program induced lag. Some of the lag that folks have described sounds more like the computer waiting to give throttle for some reason.

An example of this is if I were to back out of my driveway and then shift into drive and punch it while still rolling slightly backwards. The truck won't actually give any, or much, throttle until the backwards motion stops, then it takes off.

I'm wondering if for some reason this same thing is happening?

You know I was thinking this same thing just not saying it. It would seem the delay is worse when you immediately go to WOT, even at WOT the delay doesn't seem as bad when you kick it down to pass or speed up for some reason, it's just from a dead stop. I'll try to play with it and see, but when driving normally I don't notice any delay.

I'm just guessing here from far left field, but could it be defueling to keep from dumping the drivetrain out in the road? You know let it get rolling a little before pouring the fuel to it.

It will not matter how much fuel you dump it at takeoff; without turbo boost it is simply not going to build significant power. Extra fuel will help reduce the lag, but only to a certain extent. At a certain point, more fuel will do nothing but make excess smoke.

You know this is a good point even with more fuel than is needed, its still not going to make drive train smashing forces until the turbo comes in.

You know I have only tried this once since it's a new truck and I just don't want to do it yet. Anyway I very mildly held the brake until I just started to see maybe 8 PSI or so of boost. While it didn't-light em up I did feel the back end make a small sideways movement, very cool indeed.
