can a person consume a week for the betterment of their health, and at the same time not put themselves in to a alchohol dependency situation ?? (become a wino) .
1 small glass a day. Approx. 6 ounces, and skip 1 or 2 days out of the week. You'd have to have some real dependancy issues to become an alcoholic on that amount, and that's plenty for the health benefits it provides. I highly recommend the Australian reds: high quality across the continent (I've never had a bad glass of Australian wine), very drinkable, and great value for the dollar.
thanks for the replies all. My reason for this question is that my wife put her mother in a total care nursing home 2 years ago . Her mother has Alzeimer's , and it is such a dreadful way to live and die. My wife is worried about the genetics of being stricken with it herself later in life. She is 59 now and I am noticing she has some words "vanish" from her speech while she is trying to finish a sentence. Her cousin told her that she had read in a report somewhere that red wine will help curb the disease , plus helps the kidneys and also the cleaning out of the arterial passages. This report may just be hopeful wishing, but my wife is going to try the wine anyway . Heck if it doesnt help to curb Alzeimer's, at least I will understand why she forgets her words, it will be the WINE talking , .
My mom has Alzeimer's, my grandmother had it, my uncle had it, and I'm not sure who else in my family has had it, so I'm a little worried myself.
When anyone from my family goes to a new doctor, and they ask about what illness we, or family members have, we usually say it will be a lot quicker to answer as to what we don't have.
As for the wine, back when I was younger the correct amount to consume was a quart a night, or, until I ran out, or passed out.
Don't do that anymore, too old.
Seriously, I am trying to find a red wine that I like the taste of that won't break the bank. Hummm. Maybe some Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill, or Mad Dog 20/20.

Try the box wine. I like Franzia Chillable Red. Just keep it in the fridge and you can get a glass whenever then. Can't beat 5 liters for $8-10. It's a little on the sweet side for me, but drinkable, just don't think of it as "fine wine." Of course, you're talking about Boone's and MD....
Europeans (particularly the French) have an extremely high-fat diet, yet have a very low incedence of heart disease and other ailments normally associated with high-fat consumption. The only explanation they can come up with is their wine consumption and its anti-oxidant benefits.
Red wine also helps lower your "bad" cholesterol levels. And drinkingthe cheap box crap is a good way to get a headache. If you have problems with that, try a "naked" wine, the don't have wood tannins.

A glass or two of the cheap stuff has never given me a headache. The benefits are only if it is consumed IN MODERATION. I'm sure I'd get a headache if I drank 4, 6 or more glasses of that stuff. I was trying to offer a solution so that Greg could drink a glass a day without having to spend $20 or more a week on wine.
two glasses a day; skipping a day whenever you want to average five days a week. get a merlot, a cabernet sovignon(sp?), or a zinfandel(not white), they have the medicinal effects that you are looking for. You can buy a decent bottle for $6 at a liquor store, and buy two a week. i recommend Dancing Bull Zinfandel, it has wonderful overtones and is only $8 a bottle.

Studies have shown a connection between cooking in bare aluminum cookware and Alzeimers. My dad had dementia when he died a few years ago, so I know what you are going through. Most people don't understand the situation until it hits home. Also, I personally destroyed almost every bare aluminum cooking item, just so nobody else could use it. Medicine is changing and new products are out there, but I know there is a drug called Aericept (spelling?) that was shown to slow down the progression of Alzeimers. It is most effective at the beginning of Alzeimers. Once a person has it, the drug is of far less value. If you think she has Alzeimers, see a doctor soon. They do have ways to detect it.
The key health promoting antioxidant in red wine is resveratrol. There are many studies being conducted with resveratrol and other antioxidants in relation to heart disease. There will be tons of information in upcoming years on this matter. So have a glass or two.
I called my wife at work and had her go to the grocery store during her lunch hour and pick up a "box" of Franzia Chillable Red. At first she wasn't too keen on buying a 5 liter box of wine. She thought she would look like a cheap wine-o. That was the reason I asked her to go in the first place, so I wouldn't look like a cheap wine-o.
To tell the truth, the wine is pretty good. I like a sweet wine, and you sure can't beat the price. So I guess I am a cheap wine-o.
ehhh? Last time i drank that boxed wine, i had a touch much and drove my poor subaru over some nasty rocks, at 30 mph, bent in the radiator in, busted the oil filter and kept driving just long enough to burn up my engine. Brilliant. I had a headache that morning. But now I'm drivin my new 2 fity duty, higher stance inspires a slower more relaxed driving style. i just laugh at all those anxious little imports who can't see over a speedbump!
A glass or two of boxed wine shouldn't give you a headache.
