Unhappy Flash Engine Light check

I recently had a new engine installed in my SUV, all was well for a couple of days now I got the Check Engine light smiling at me.

Can I extract codes by interpreting the engine flashes on a 98 Explorer. How do I trigger the out put?
Also is it possible to read the codes out with a Meter?

Or am I stuck buying one of them pricy little scanners.

Did I simply miss the post with all the answers when I enetered my search criteria.

I miss the old days.... Points, spark plugs, timing and tweek the carb.

On your Explorer you cant retrieve codes without a scan tool.
If you have an Autozone close by they will usually scan it for free. If you get it scanned make note of the code that they get and not just the description of it. Post the code here and someone will be able to help. I wouldn't buy any parts from whoever scans it without doing some more checking. For instance a P0401 code is very common. It indicates an EGR problem. Lots of parts stores will try to sell you and EGR valve when really the most common cause of the code is the EGR pressure sensor.

That link applies to the EEC-IV system used up through '95. '96 and later use EEC-V/OBD-2 which requires some kind of scanner to access trouble codes.
