When did the ford trucks go to 12v? I see instrument voltage regs in catalogs and wonder why they were needed up into the 1960's. Were some gauges still 6v? Reason I ask is I'm after a reg that will drop the voltage from 12 to 6 in a 36 Ford and still be able to be used in a pos ground setup. Thanks for any info. And you at the top with the Mohawk cut. What's your handle? I don't see you doing any posting except to make threats. I have friends that can "handle you". I want you off this forum by sundown. Terry

Ford went to 12V in 1956. The reason for the instrument panel voltage regulator is because the instruments use a lower voltage, now why, I don't know the answer to that. But I bet that somebody on this board will come along and tell us why. That is why I love this board, you can get an answer just about every time.

Ford used 6V guages until 1986. After that, they eliminated the cv regulator and went to 12 V guages.

12 V instruments

Does this mean that my 1951 F1 6V instruments (fuel, oil pressure and coolant temperature) will work with my 1968, 289 cubic inch, V8, temperature and oil pressure senders so long as I have a simple voltage reducer from someone like www.RonFrancis.com

I have been wanting to replace the under dash mechanical pressure gage and thermocouple temperature gage installed by a previous owner of my son'
s 1951 F!

The later guages senders are technically matched to the early guages. They may not be accurate.
