I have a 2001 4WD Escape with approximately 77K miles. The car seems to be getting around 15 MPG using regular (87 octane) gas. How does this compare what other people are getting? I live in the metro DC area and most of my driving is for commuting about 25 miles a day. On the highway for an extended trip the car might get 19+ MPG, but this seems low. A neighbor with an '01 Mazda Tribute is getting around 18 MPG with the same type of driving habit.
The car is well-maintained and otherwise (except for the transmission) runs great. Any ideas for how I can improve this? I am hoping to get this closer to 17-18 MPG, or a 15-20% increase, which I think is going to be tough.
The only thing that could be a problem are the tires and alignment. The Continentals are very noisy and I wonder if another tire might make a difference.
I've got an 02 but it's not a 4WD and it has 74k miles. 90% highway commute through downtown Dallas - 24-25mpg. Worst I've seen is 22mpg with alot of cargo and short trips.
