I am currently fixing up my dads 79 F-150 and it has a 4 speed manual tranny.
I would like to find a tranny with overdrive for better gas mileage since this is probably going to be a daily driver. I've done a little reasearch and don't think that they made an overdrive manual transmission for this year. I was wonderin if a later model had this type of transmission and how big of a deal would it be to get a hold of one and make the change. I want to keep it a manual. The engine is a 300 I-6 if that helps.
It has been done, using a newer 5spd. The tough part is the new trans uses hydrolic clutch, so you will have to adapt that to your '79. Search this forum, it's been discussed in detail in the past.
Jake, Any tranny that will bolt to a 302 or 351W will bolt to your engine. As Marty noted there are other issues with either manual or auto that will have to be overcome.
You may find it easier and cheaper to go to a taller gear set in your rear end.
As an exapmple....If you have a 3.50 final drive and you go to a 2.75 it's about the same as putting in a transmission with a .80 overdrive.
Unless your pulling heavy loads and have a need to stay in a certain power band, no reason to change the clutch, buy a transmission, sweat through a bunch of "damn its" just to climb through the extra gear when the light turns green.
