Wink Help Only One brake light?

I have a 1967 f100 and I can't figure out why the left brake light is not working. All other lights are fine, turn signals etc. I am not sure if it is in the wiring or what. Does anyone have any suggestions?

probably the contact in the turn signal switch. replace the cancleor to fix it, just be sure to get the contacts back in the right spot.

Jim I would look for corrosion around the socket first. I think most issues start there, and then move forward.

If the left turn signal is working, the lamp and socket is ok.

I have the same problem on the right side. I will be attacking it tomorrow, so hopefully, I'll have some words of wisdom for you by tomorrow night.

there are i think 3 contacts that are on the bottom of the cancelor, if the cancelor gets loose it will allow theses contacts to move or slip out of place. when this happens, you can lose 1 light, like a brake light, but the turn signal will still work. the cancelors are a simple design that does a complicated job.

if yours is starting to get loose, you can tighten it up most of the time by pushing the lock onto the shaft a little bit. this only works if everything is still functioning properly.

first things first

You didn't mention that you have changed the bulb. Start with that, and then use your testlight to test for juice on socket contacts. Have someone hit the pedal, or jam a stick/rod between pedal and seat/steering wheel if you're by yourself. Eliminate all the simple things before you tear into that steering wheel.

Lightbulb

Could be a bad ground. I've found this problem often on my old Fords. Turn on the lights. See if the left tailight is on. If so have someone press the brake. If the tailight goes out the socket isn't grounded. The socket has a wire that should go to a ground screw on the body. Check the wire and the mounting screw for corrosion. Hope this may help.

Well, I traced mine to the turn signal switch, but it will be about 2 weeks before I get a chance to pull the steering wheel to see what it'll take to fix it on mine. Hope you have an easier fix on yours.

I'm new here, so am still searching through the vast amount of info on the site. I just located a Technical article posted on 6-30-2001 in the electrical and wiring section dealing with these type problems. It looks to be an excellent troubleshooting guide. Check it out.

1967 F100 Brake Light Switch

Hello, Folks!

I'm running into a similar problem as a few people, where all of my lights but the brake lights are functioning.
My truck is a 1967 F100 Styleside, (V8, C17) converted from 3spd OTC to the floor, and has a different steering column... (fyi)

Thinking I knew where the brake light switch was at, looked at the arm for the brakes, and didn't see it. Basically standing on my head, I could see the fuse box (left side of the firewall, under the light switch), but couldn't see the switch itself... (possibly buried in underside of the dashboard?)

So, I'm thinking I'm looking in the wrong place at this point. Is the brake light switch connected to the light switch? I'm guessing I should be looking for a circuit breaker instead of a fuse? (Is the circuit breaker on the right side of the fender well, under the hood?)

Any help that you might be able to offer is definitely appreciated! (Questions, too!)

MH, Do you have a pressure switch on a brake line or at the Master Cylinder?

Ah, thanks for pointing that out, 71 SC, let me look really quick...

I didn't see anything on the topside near the MC, so I followed the brakelines to the underside, and see what appears to be a switch adjacent to the front Driver's side brakedrum, tucked into the frame channel... is that what I'm supposed to be looking for?

Thanks!

Good grief, someone hit me with a tackhammer... I was filtering through some old schematics, and got a closer look underneath the dash... the brake light switch is a little further up the brake pedal arm, showing only the black plastic backing towards the driver, almost disguising it...

Sorry for the Rookie mistake, Folks... Once I buy the part and start to install it, I'll try to take some pics of the process...

I just fix the same problem your describing,my left brake light would not turn on wen I stepped on the brake pedal,it was the turn signal cam I just pushed the lock washer down to tighten it up and problem solved, take the steering wheel off and you will see the cam push the cam down with you fingers on the ends and step on the brake pedal and check if the light comes on.
