Replacing side mirrors

It seems that most of the Bronco II's I see have the full size Bronco side mirrors. On my 89 the paddle type mirrors are very loose and won't stay in position. If I upgrade to the full size mirrors do I just use sheet metal screws to attach the bottom of the mirror support to the body? Does anyone prefer the paddle mirrors??

I had to replase the door on mine and it had a paddle type mirror. I did just like you suggested and used sheet metal screws it worked just fine. just don't tighten to much and break the screw head.

Replacing side mirrors

The best way to do this is to drill holes for 1/4 stainless steel bolts so they just fit (7/32 etc.). Make sure you use the plastic pad that goes between the mirror feet and the door. Use a backing plate at least one inch wider and taller than the mirror foot on the back of the door.

Put a layer/coating of RTV
under head of cap bolt
inside hole itself
around holes on the inside and outside of the door panel

Once the mirror is on and the bolts are through the door,
(which will be held in place because the hole was tight and you forced the unthreaded part of the bolt through) put RTV on the backside of the bolt and hole, put the backing plate on so RTV squishes out from all the edges and holes, put on a washer/lockwasher, and nut. Then smooth the RTV around the edges of the plates and cover the nut/bolt ends.

This installation will help prevent the door from rusting and regular screws from pulling through or buckling the metal if your side mirror hits something. This way a well oiled mirror will bend in towards the door without damage to the mirror or door.
