Engine break in period

I have a '04 250 PSD and I'm coming up to my first oil change. I've read alot on this forum to only put 13.5 qts. in it but I am wanting to change to AmsOil synthetic oil. I've been told it will be better if I wait until the engine is broken in before using it due to the engine won't break in properly because of the high film strength of AmsOil. When do you know when the engine is broken in?? At what milage??

Thanks in advance.

Scott

emsav8er,

First off welcom to FTE lots of good people and info around here

Diesels can take 20-30,000 miles to break in. As for how soon to switch to synthetic oil and what kind well that is a very heated debate around here. Kinda like the boxers or briefs argument.

Some run synthetic Mobil 1 right away, others wait and some never run synthetic but stick with dino.

Do a search here and in the oil forum and sit back and read read read and then make your decision.

Hey Bubba,

Yah that's definately a heated thread round these parts. I personally drained my break-in oil at 1000 and went straight to Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40. I did the same thing in my 7.3. I did this for several reasons. One, because there is a lot of contaminents after 1000 miles with your break-in. So it's best to get that out. Two, I'm from Missouri, where in 3 months time we can go from 110 degrees to 30 degrees. So seasonal versatility is extremely important. Three, on boths my trucks my fuel average increased by about 1.5mpg when I switched. Four, you can do 20k miles changes, but I still would recommend filter changes at 5kmiles. I was going to do Amsoil until I found out that their full synthetic isn't API certified. Which means if you had an engine problem, and they tested the oil for composition and matched it to an uncertified oil that they "could", again "could" argue the oil was the failure. Therefore you would be out a whole lot of money. Now to all you reading this, I am just informing of the situation. He may make his own decision and I won't say anything. This is the reason I went with Delvac 1, because that would just be one less thing to worry about. I did recently find out that Amsoil has recently had their synthetic blend for these engines API certified. So with the blend at least you wouldn't have to worry. I have noticed that in winter with the Delvac 1 5w-40, the beast seems to be much more at ease with starting than with the original 15w-40. Of course I'm sure that is the case with all 5w-40s. At my dealer all 4 diesel techs drive 6.0's, and everyone of them use Delvac 1. They started after I told them how much I liked it in my 7.3 a couple years ago. Course back then they had their 7.3's too. Hope this helps. Hope I don't get flamed or pronounced a troll.

Best of Luck,
Corey

P.S. As far as price, I get a case(4 gallons) for $92w/tax. That gives me about 2qts to top off if it is needed. By the way, 2 of the techs stay with 5000-7500mile intervals, 1 changes at every 10000, and the other when his oil report says so. I myself still change at 5000.
