I have a 1997 v8 awd mountaineer with 142,000 miles on it. The other day I was driving between 25-30 mph and the truck start vibrating like it was running over a rumble strip on side the road... I thought it may of just been a rough road, but it has happened since then. Another time I was getting up to speed (not doggin it) and about 55 mph it did it again.. you can hear it and feel it in the truck... When this happens it only last for seconds. I'm not sure what it is. Has anyone else had this happen? I thought it was transmission or something to do with the all wheel drive. But I have no clue. The truck is parked most of the time now, since I am back at school. If anyone can give some advice I would appreciate it.
I checked it and its full and the color is red. I thought it might be the driveshaft or transfer case or something. If it is the torque converter how much does that cost to get fixed? Hope I'm not sounding too dumb about all this... Oh yeah will it hurt if I drive it?
Thanks,
Chris

Yeah I guess I need take it in...There are no codes as of yet... I wouldn't think it is the transmission tho... I dont know... thanks for your help
Chris
well the first thing i would do is change the fluid...it should cost about 100 bucks or so to get all the fluid flushed out...or if you wanna drop the pan and drain your pain and torque convertor that way.
jhromy, thanks for your help on this... I'm takin the truck to the shop on Thurs to get it flushed and see if that is the problem, hopefully it is, ill let you know how it turns out.
Ok, so I took the truck in to get the transmission flushed today, but the problem is still there. It happens when the truck is shifting from 3rd to 4th I believe. Is there any other possible thing that could be wrong??? I dont know what do now. Is it possible that the transmission is bad? or just the torque converter? or the drivetrain? If anyone has suggests please let me know....
I recently had a similar occurrence on my 97 Explorer 5.0 AWD and it was the front driveshaft. A dealer in Kansas City was kind enough to replace it in exchange for my never-ending gratitude and $443.00.
my 97 mountaineer (180k miles on the transmission and engine) does that too... the front shafts were replaced a while back so I do not think that is it in my case. I can also get it to do it by driving a certain way (i.e. accelerate somewhat slowly and let it shift gingerly from 3rd to 4th). When I drive it a little harder it does not do it. It was worse before I changed the fluid on the tranny. A flush made it better, but it has been coming back. I am pretty sure that the transmission is pretty close to EOL but I am going to wait (I think) until it dies. This is my secondary vehicle so I do not drive it when I have to be somewhere.
it did feel like the transmission right? because that is what i thought it was at 1st, but with the feedback i'm not soo sure now... Im just not sure why I feel it from 3rd to 4th for the most part......
