Fuel and spark
Here's the situation. '88 bronco 5.8 with auto transmisson. 5 months ago, I drove this truck into the garage to change out a water pump. It was running fine except for a little water leak in the water pump. I ended up breaking three water pump bolts and cracking the timing cover. Yesterday, I finally replaced the timing cover and got the broken bolts out. While I was in there, I replaced the timing chain which had some play in it. I did ensure that the timing marks on the timing gear stayed in alignment. I got it all put back together and now it cranks over but won't start. I am not getting any fire at the spark plug and I dont hear the fuel pump kick on when I turn the key. While removing the water pump, I did crack theignition module on the side of the distributor but it is still intact. Would this cause the spark problem? I appreciate any input from you guys.
I have a quick question for you, (sorry i can't help with your ignition,) how did you know that your water pump needed to be replaced? I seem to have a leak in my cooling system and can't figure out where it's coming from....did the gasket around the your pump fail? My water pump makes no chattering noise and my temp gauge is always cool. I see a few drops of water coming from the top of the pump and I'm thinking it's the leak....and gonna get worse. let me know what your symptoms were if you could. thanks
Yes, if you have water coming out of the weep hole, your pump is going bad. Mine sat for a year while I was overseas and when I returned, the pump was dried out in the bearings causing a loud whine while the truck was running. That is how I knew it was going. After releaving the tension from the belt, the fan was very loose and I could tell that the water pumps front bearings were gone. I'm not sure what kind of environment your truck gets exposed to but if it's a lot of sand and ranch dirt like mine is, I would make sure to put plenty of penetrating oil on all the water pump bolts. I would start soaking it every day for at least a couple of days before actually pulling the pump. This might save you from breaking rusty bolts and compounding your problems.
I was checking for spark comming out of the coil and don't have anything there either. If the Ignition control module (which I cracked) is faulty, would that cause no spark out of the coil into the distributor?
