Anyone know the correct way to make an adjustment of the steering box to eliminate steeering wheel play. The rest of the suspension/steering mechanism is either tight or new. I've done it in the past but we're talking the distant past(25+ years). I know to back off jam nut but is there a point you shouldn't go past on the adjuster? Nothing in my Haynes manual that I could find. Old cars with manual steering it was easy to tell when you had it just right. Power steering hard to tell. Truck is an 88 Ranger, 4X4,2.9L, 5spd, reg cab,316k. Power steering(as with all vehicles today).

The ones I have done were in 70's F-250's. The shop manual had a very specific procedure using a torque wrench on the steering shaft with the linkage dis-connected. It is very easy to get it too tight doing it by feel. I know, I have done it.
How much is a rebuilt box? With that many miles, it might be the way to go.
