Engine Shuts Off

I have a 82 F150 with 36K miles, it has a 300? IL-6, automatic transmission. I usually just putt around doing errands and hardly ever go at expressway speeds. As I go down the road the engine just shuts off, it has always restarted so far, usually right back , but sometimes it's taken several trys and a couple of minutes, but it's getting to where I don't want to use the truck. This problem seems to have nothing to do with whether the engine is warm or cold. On a few occassions I've gone out to move the truck or leave a field and all it does is turn over the engine, the choke isn't sticking and I changed the fuel filter, there was had plenty of fuel flow and pressure at that time. My local mechanic said there was about a $20 emmission control that could be causing this, but being the good guy he is he said just bring it by. He's the type of guy who would save me a dollar anytime possible, but I would rather spend the $20 to eliminate a possible cause. I didn't dare ask him which part it might be. He did say that it was usually at normal temperature when these emission device usually failed, not cold. Any suggestions would be appreciated because I use this as a farm truck but also depend on it as a backup vehicle and right now it's not too dependable. Thanks

This may be indicative of the Duraspark II module on the drivers inner fender failing.

My old 82 did this for awhile before it failed one morning completely. They should be fairly inexpensive to replace from your local auto store/mechanic.
